Design Challenges of Industrial Ethernet Networks

Although based on the same ethernet standard, designing and specifying industrial network components is more challenging than working with commercial networks, where cables are typically sheltered from hazards that can impact the integrity and performance of the networks components.

In commercial networks, components interface with low voltage devices while cables are often routed under the floor, through the ceilings or behind walls. Key Aspects of Industrial Ethernet Networks

Industrial networks are all about reliability and being deterministic; this means having data transmitted and received both clearly and consistently without noise or perturbations on the signals. Coupling signals from devices that work with different power potentials presents a threat to the devices themselves, where a fault operation in one device can spread a high potential over the network, thus compromising other devices.

Having the adequate isolation level integrated to the networking interface of devices is perhaps the most critical aspect of industrial ethernet enabled devices, as it impacts directly the ruggedness of the network.

By nature, automation is constantly shifting towards better performance through new technologies, yet their adoption is gradual. Therefore, networks need to cope with equipment that operates on older or legacy networks; allowing for retro compatibility and sparing capacity for further developments while providing increased network performance is vital within the design of industrial network interfacing devices.

This means maintaining third party devices to keep them operative through their entire product life cycle, while at the same time managing an increasing data flow capability required from newer and future devices. Within this approach of adaptability, network interface design also entails broadening the electrical specifications of networking components to meet the different standards required from different communication protocols.
