How BMS Components Work

Large battery packs typically use a “daisy chain” structure, with many cells linked in sequence. These cells can differ dramatically in their voltage from one to the next.

These components need to be strictly isolated from each other to ensure safe operation.

In many modern BMS systems, serial communication links between circuit boards are isolated with transformer coupling circuits, rather than capacitor couplings.

Because of the high number of transformer coupling circuits used in most BMS applications, and the importance of their performance to the life of the battery and the BMS, these components need to be reliable.

BMS Features and Benefits

The Pulse Electronics Networking BU team has designed several BMS transformers to use for EVs, PHEVS, and HEVs.

In addition to their durability, these components have several essential characteristics that distinguish them from competitors and predecessors:

  • Meets AEC-Q200 requirements for automotive applications. The Automotive Electronics Council has put several industry standards in place to assure the reliability of electronic components used in vehicles.
